French Riviera: discover the most beautiful places!
Why is the Côte d’Azur called the French Riviera? English speakers speak of riviera or French Riviera, which is modelled on the Italian riviera, which means “a region characterized by the brutal contact between the sea and the mountains”. In the Occitan language, and whatever the dialect in the whole South of France, the term “riviera” is transcribed by the name “Còsta d’Azur”, not to be confused with “Ribiera” which means a river. In French, for a long time people have spoken of the Rivers of Genoa and Nice.
