La Croisette in Cannes is the equivalent of Nice’s Promenade des Anglais. Cannes’ iconic seafront offers amazing views of the Mediterranean Sea alongside some long palm trees, luxury casinos and designer boutiques as well. Of course, you will also see a lot of hotels, many of which have their own private beaches but there are is also a great number of public beaches.
However, this beautiful promenade wasn’t always like this. At the beginning, it was little more than a dirt road that would usually be swept away by waves and storms. In 1850, when the rich would visit to spend their winters and enjoy the Mediterranean climate of the French Riviera, the city had to install a decent promenade to satisfy the needs of the new visitors. Thus, the famous Croisette was finally constructed.
Today, at more than 3km long, the Croisette offers a beautiful sidewalk where luxurious hotels meet casinos, outlets of well-known brands, sandy beaches, a rose garden, the new harbour, the Pierre-Canto port and tree-shaded gardens.
The Croisette is also known for the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, where the Cannes Film Festival is held. During the summer, there are also other kind of events taking place in the Croisette, from music concerts to sporting activities.
