Just below the Citadel in Saint Tropez, you will find the Old Town called La Ponche, the historic centre of the old fishing village. It is one of the most picturesque areas of Saint Tropez, filled with heritage and culture. It’s the ideal place to get a glimpse of Saint Tropez’s history.
Initially used as the village’s fishing district, this little quarter never seeks to amaze its visitors. The area was very famous back in the day, especially for Spanish, Italian, and Greek fisherman who would join the locals to fish.
It is the most famous pedestrian zone in Saint Tropez with beautiful laid narrow alleyways and lanes surrounded by small shops, deluxe boutiques, exclusive and chic cafés as well as luxurious and traditional restaurants.
A lot of important landmarks are also situated in the old town such as the Église de Notre-Dame de l’Assomption with its a beautiful Italian Baroque bell tower. You will also find the Palais des Bailli Pierre-Andre de Suffren, one of the most important admirals of the French navy fleet in the 17th century.
Walk through the narrow streets of the Old Town and explore the Provençal soul of this beautiful village. Stroll through the designer boutiques, head to the waterfront promenade, admire the views, then walk towards the Place des Lices and visit its markets. Have a small break at one of the chic cafés or try a local dish at one of the traditional restaurants which can be found in the area.
