Overview

Cimiez est un quartier de Nice qui abrite les ruines spectaculaires de l’ancienne ville romaine. Dans l’Antiquité, elle était connue sous le nom de “Cemenelum”, et elle a existé en tant que ville distincte jusqu’à ce qu’elle fasse progressivement partie de Nice. Cemenelum était une ville rivale de la ville grecque “Nikaia” située sur le front de mer.

 

Cimiez est finalement devenue un lieu de villégiature privilégié des rois et des reines qui visitaient la Côte d’Azur en hiver, parmi lesquels la reine Victoria de Nice, les rois Edward VII et George V de Grande-Bretagne ainsi que Léopold II de Belgique. Certaines rues de Cimiez portent même leur nom aujourd’hui.

 

Le long des rues de Cimiez, vous trouverez le parc des Arènes, qui est un endroit idéal pour pique-niquer, puis vous pourrez vous rendre au musée Matisse. Vous y trouverez les œuvres fascinantes de l’artiste le plus célèbre de Nice, ainsi que certains de ses objets personnels.

 

À l’est du parc, vous trouverez le monastère de Cimiez, qui date du XVIe siècle. Les jardins qui s’y trouvent sont également un endroit merveilleux pour profiter de la vue sur Cimiez et prendre votre déjeuner.

 

Vous pouvez également visiter le cimetière de Cimiez où sont enterrés plusieurs artistes français célèbres, dont Henri Matisse lui-même, Raoul Dufy ainsi que d’influents diplomates russes et britanniques.

 

Le cimetière se trouve à une bonne distance de marche de la gare, dans le centre de la ville, et il vaut la peine d’être visité pour découvrir sa riche histoire romaine. Le quartier est principalement résidentiel mais reste très chic, en hommage à son héritage artistique et culturel.
