If you happen to visit Menton between mid-February to early March then you might be able to see the town’s most famous festival, the Lemon Festival, or la Fête du Citron.
Menton is very well known for its lemon groves surrounding the whole city which is mostly due to its mild microclimate which allows citrus trees to grow all year round. The city celebrates lemons every year by throwing the lemon festival, in which a parade with very impressive sculptures created by lemons runs through the streets of the city.
The sculptures are truly amazing. Tonnes of citrus fruit are needed in order to create them and they are really worth seeing. The festival takes place from morning to night, and at night the parade with its sculptures is illuminated, enhancing the audience’s experience.
In addition to the festival, you will find a lot of products in many local shops that are produced around the theme of lemons, from lemon-infused olive oil, candied lemon peels, lemon vinegar, Limoncello liqueur, lemon-scented soaps and much more.
This festival is worth the detour. If you happen to be in Menton in spring we highly advise you to take part in this experience and admire the parade. The whole city has a strong and beautiful fresh lemon scent during the time of the festival!
And in case you were wondering, the fruits are never wasted. On the contrary, at the end of this magnificent event, all fruits are sold at very affordable prices!
