About Menton

Menton is a relatively small town located on the French Riviera located between Monaco and the Italian border. Its population is less than thirty thousand people. The locals speak a dialect called Mentonesc.

The centre of the town is the historic district with beautiful colourful houses and narrow streets, La Vieille Ville (the Old Town) with the baroque Basilica of Archangel Michael and the 53-metre high bell tower. The centre of the Old Town is the bustling pedestrian street Rue Saint Michel. Located in the harbour is Le Bastion, a 17th-century fortress that houses the Jean Cocteau Museum. There you can also find the botanical gardens with subtropical vegetation, the Jardin Serre de la Madone and Jardin botanique exotique de Menton. An Orthodox church for Russian visitors, the former princely residence Palais Carnolès, Le palais de l’Europe (the European Palace, built in 1909) and the covered market from 1898.

In short, this picturesque town has a lot to offer, which is why it’s a bit of a shame that it’s often overlooked by tourists travelling on the French Riviera. On the other hand, if you want to avoid the tourists and experience an authentic Mediterranean atmosphere, this is the right stop for you.
