The Fort Carré an impressive old stone castle up high on the edge of the Saint-Roch Peninsula. The fort offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea which surrounds the beautiful French Riviera.

It was built in the 16^th century upon Roman ruins, making this place great for discovering an exciting history and witnessing the view across the harbour. It was strategic site for the town of Antibes as it was used as a defence and to monitor the border with the city’s rivals, the Duke of Savoy, which ruled the County of Nice back then. The Fort Carré was attacked multiple times by the army of the Duke of Savoy and outsiders but it was never brought down to the ground as the city would improve it every time after the attacks.

During the French Revolution, this fort was also used to imprison Napoleon. The fort was also used in a military context as a gathering centre during the First World War. You can see a monument known as the ‘Poilu’, a statue which is dedicated to and honours the soldiers who died for France during the First World War.

Fort Carré was then bought by the City of Antibes in 1997 and officially opened to the public in 1998. It’s the perfect place to discover its fascinating architecture, environment and history. You might even recognise this fort from the James Bond film Never Say Never Again.

It is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm. Make sure you book your reservation in advance!
