Overview

As you wander the streets of the old town of Villefranche-sur-Mer, you are sure to come across Église Saint-Michel. The first mention of a church in the town dates back to the early 13th century.

In the 18th century, the church was then rebuilt at the instigation of the town council, as the original medieval church was already too decayed. The present church was completed in 1757. The architect is unknown but it could be the architect Borra or Devincenti.

Inside the church, the most dominant element is a life-size Christ carved from a single piece of fig wood, an anonymous work by a galley slave. There is also an organ by the Grinda Brothers from 1790, and both are listed as historic monuments.

The church also contains a marble tombstone of Octavian Emmanuel Camparo de Cairo, a Knight of Malta who died in 1728.

This is a building that should not be missed in Villefranche. In front of the church, you can also relax on a small patch in the shade of the trees to admire the beautiful pink and white façade and recharge your batteries for your next exploration of the town.
