At the foot of the Rock of Monaco, facing the beautiful port of Fontvieille, lies the SAS Vintage Car Collection Museum which was founded by Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1993.
Prince Rainier always had a passion for cars and it was only at the end of the 1950s when he decided to begin a collection of vintage cars. Over the years his collection would only grow bigger. In 1993 he made the decision to present his collection to the public as his garage wasn’t big enough to contain all of it.
The exhibition includes Prince Rainier’s collection of restored vintage cars that were built up over more than 30 years. The exhibition was then continued by his son, the current Prince Albert II, displaying his private collection which is also attached to the history of Monaco.
More specifically, the collection includes coaches of the rulers of the whole Principality, models of rally cars, Formula 1 from the history of the Monaco Grand Prix and a more prestigious historic collection with brands such as Renault, Peugeot, Chrysler, Imperial, Maserati, Ferrari, Bugatti, Porsche, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini.
Also located close by is the Naval Museum of Monaco, a museum dedicated to ships and sailing, as well as the museum of stamps and coins of Monaco with private collections.
Visiting hours are between 10 am and 6 pm. You can visit the museum by bus line 5 or 6 at the Centre Commercial de Fontvieille stop or by walking. It is 5 minutes from the main train station and 20 minutes from the Place du Casino.
