Overview

Even though you cannot see it today, during the 11th century there was a medieval castle and a grand cathedral on what we now call the Colline du Château. The castle was a formidable fortress and it was attacked many times by outsiders as they all wanted to conquer. It was not until 1706 when Nice was attacked and lost its castle.

Today you can still find the remains of the Castle all the way up to the hill where you will also spot a massive park, the ‘Parc de la Colline du Château’. Before you reach the top of the hill you will also discover a massive waterfall and stone mosaics inspired by the Greeks who established Nice back in the 6th century BC. Last but not least, don’t forget to take your panoramic pictures from the observation deck which is located above the waterfall. The view of the Promenade des Anglais and the rest of the city is just astonishing!

There is also a Jewish cemetery on the northwestern part of the hill known as the Cimetière Israélite, with detailed monuments that show off Nice’s rich history.

The entrance to the hill is free of charge and you can also use the elevator if you don’t want to climb the stairs. The elevator is also free of charge and you can find it across from the seaside.

If you happen to visit the Colline du Château at noon, be aware of the famous cannon blast which is shot off from the hill every day at 12:00 noon. It is also a great time to enjoy your lunch at the park where many people choose to have a picnic.
