The Chapelle de la Sainte Croix dates back to the beginning of the 14th century and it is the oldest building in the village of Èze.
This chapel used to serve as the seat of the brotherhood of the White Penitents of Èze. During the time of its construction, the region was suffering from epidemics of plague. The White Penitents would dress in balaclavas and white robes to assist the sick.
The outer architecture of this church with its particular shape of the bell-tower has its roots during the time when Èze belonged to the Republic of Genoa. Another interesting fact is that this church also served as the place where the people of Èze voted unanimously for the city to be joined to France during the time when Nice was also officially annexed to France back in 1860.
Visit this place of worship and admire its porch decorated with pebble mosaics, its high altar and its crucifix with Catalan origins which represents the smiling Christ. This little chapel is a true gem of the village of Èze.
