The Jardin Exotique is located in Fontvieille, a little bit outside of the city centre. The garden first opened its doors in 1933. In 1950, a tour of the ‘observatory cave’ was introduced, which is situated at the base of the garden cliff.

The underground cavity is covered in stalactites and stalagmites and was carved out by water millions of years ago. The tour of the observatory cave is guided by experts and it takes place between an altitude of 40m and 98m. You will see a lot of traces of prehistoric human habitat that have been found in the exact location. The cave is unique in the world; it actually gets hotter the further you go down! Make sure you hold on tight to the guardrail – it can get very slippery.

There is also a botanical centre which is located a little bit outside of the Garden but it remains attached to the Exotic Garden. This botanical centre holds an important heritage and contains the largest collection of cacti and succulents in the world.

During your visit, you will have the opportunity to discover a surprising mix of plants. The garden features African and Latin American species that grow on the Mediterranean land due to its warm climate.

The garden offers breathtaking views of the Principality of Monaco as it is built on the side of a cliff that overlooks the sea. Appreciate the beautiful views of the deep blue sea that attracts every year a great number of visitors here on the French Riviera! You will even catch glimpses of the Italian side as well.
