Upon your arrival at Place Garibaldi, you should not miss a visit to the Musée d’art moderne et d’art contemporain (Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art), or MAMAC for short. The museum is dedicated to art from the last sixty or so years and it has been operating since 1990.
You can find around 1,300 works by 300 artists with different styles from New European Realism to the American expression of assemblage art and Pop Art. Some other key works that are displayed in the museum include minimal art and arte povera.
The museum offers a regular program of exhibitions of international level in its contemporary gallery. It alternates between thematic exhibitions and monographs of major figures of modern and contemporary art.
There is also a museum shop which offers many books, reproductions and objects relating to modern art. A little-known highlight is the terrace which offers stunning views of the surrounding Old Town as well as the coast to the south.
You can visit the museum every day except Monday from 10 am to 6 pm, and it is easily accessible by tramway with the tram stop ‘’Garibaldi’’.
