Overview

The Stamps and Coins Museum is home to numerous rare stamps that illustrate the postal history of the Principality as well as the documents that have been used in the stamp-printing process, from 1885 to the present day.

It was established by Prince Rainier III in 1995 and was officially opened to the public only a year later. The museum displays the private collections of Prince Rainier III himself which include rare stamps from the history of Monaco, coins, medals, and banknotes.

The museum is made up of two exhibition halls; the large room which represents the chronology of coins since 1641, and stamps from Monaco’s history since 1885. There are also exhibitions that display the plasters that were used in the minting process of coins and all the documents that are used throughout the issuance of stamps. Another room, known as the rare stamps room, illustrates pre-philately documents, Sardinian and French stamps, and the very first stamps of Monaco from the reigns of Charles III and Louis II.

The MONACOPHIL exhibition also takes place every two years in this museum and it attracts the most prestigious stamp collectors and enthusiasts from all around the world.

The Stamps and Coins Museum is located on the terraces of Fontvieille and you can visit every day from 10 am to 5 pm. You can even buy some stamps and coins that are directly issued by the Principality of Monaco.
