Overview

The Maeght Foundation is a museum of modern art founded by the famous French art collector and publisher Aimé Maeght and his wife Marguerite in 1964. Besides the Maeght Foundation in Saint Paul de Vence, Aimé Maeght also founded the Maeght Gallery in Paris and Barcelona.
The foundation is entirely independently funded with no reliance on state subsidies.

The museum is located on the Colline des Gardettes, a hill overlooking Saint Paul de Vence. The beautiful building combines a white façade and exposed bricks, with an unmissable roof. It was designed by the Spanish architect Josep Lluís Sert.

The Maeght Foundation contains one of the largest collections of 20th-century art in Europe (ceramics, sculptures, collages and more, totalling more than 12,000 pieces of art), including works by artists such as Jean Arp, Pierre Bonnard, Georges Braque, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Sam Francis, Alberto Giacometti, Wassily Kandinsky, Ellsworth Kelly, Fernand Léger, Anne Madden and Joan Miró.

The museum often hosts temporary exhibitions and, as a result, only a relatively small number of permanent exhibitions are available. Many exhibitions are also organised every year in museums in France and abroad based on the Foundation’s collections.
As a point of interest, the rooms are named after famous artists, but they have nothing to do with the exhibits in each room.
Over 200,000 visitors a year visit the Maeght Foundation.

In addition to the museum itself, it is worth mentioning the lovely chapel dedicated to Bernard, the son of the Maeght family, who died of leukaemia at the age of eleven.

To sum up, if you’re a lover of modern art, you definitely shouldn’t miss the Maeght Foundation on your travels around the French Riviera, and even though you’ll be visiting Saint Paul de Vence for the Maeght Foundation, it is highly recommended to visit the other interesting sights that this village has to offer.
