If you are making a multi-day trip to Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, you should think about driving to nearby Beaulieu sur Mer and visiting the beautiful early 20th century Villa Kerylos.
This magnificent building was built between 1902 and 1908 by architect Emmanuel Pontremoli, inspired by Greek buildings from the first century BC. The construction was commissioned by the archaeologist and expert on Greece, Théodore Reinach, who bequeathed the villa to the French Institute after his death.
The villa is located in the east of the town of Beaulieu sur Mer just off the peninsula of Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, overlooking both the peninsula itself and the bay of Beaulieu to the west.
The interior of the villa is particularly worth mentioning. Rare materials have been used: Carrara marble, alabaster, exotic woods and citron trees. The wooden furniture is inlaid with ivory, bronze and leather.
In ancient Greek κηρύλος, kerylos, means “sea swallow”, probably referring to the flying fish that were widely found on the Mediterranean coast in the last century.
The villa was listed as a historic monument on 15 September 1966.
