MuCEM – Museum of Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean
Allong the old port stands Fort Saint Jean, a historical monument with free access. Nearby is Le Mucem, signed by Rudy Ricciotti, a jewel of French architecture.
I really appreciate the terrace at the top of the museum with a magnificent view of the port where you can have a drink or relax.
Enjoy a nice walk, between sun, gulls and discoveries around the Museum in Marseille.
The ‘Mucem’ in Marseille
The jewel of Marseille: the museum of the civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean. This museum was created in 2013, the year Marseille was the European Capital of Culture (the pride of the people of Marseille!). You can walk around free of charge on the outdoor spaces and gardens of the MUCEM
Marseille: Mucem and Fort Saint Jean
Your plan:
As soon as you arrive at the old port, stay on the left bank (where the Ferris wheel is located at the moment). You will discover many bars as well as a nice panorama of Notre Dame de la Garde. Continue your walk to the end of the port: where you will find the Fort Saint Jean and the Mucem.
The new emblematic concrete building on the J4 is surprising. This contemporary architectural masterpiece is in total harmony with Fort Saint Jean, a historical monument from the 12th century. A footbridge separates the two buildings. By taking the high footbridge, located above the sea, you can enjoy magnificent panoramas over the Marseilles harbor.
You will find :
- L’esplanade du J4: which houses the Villa méditerranée and the MUCEM. It offers a beautiful view of the Cathedral of the Major.
- The building – Le bâtiment by the architect Rudy Ricciotti represents “a building of stone, water and wind”. A 130 m long footbridge connects the MUCEM to Fort Saint-Jean.
- Fort Saint Jean.
