Built in the early 17th century, the Citadel served as a protection point of view from invaders. It was the main spot of defense between Toulon and Antibes until the 19th century when the weaponry became too powerful for the citadel’s ramparts to hold.
Within the dungeons, you will find the Museum of Maritime History which depicts the lives of local sailors and fishermen. You will discover the maritime past of Saint Tropez through some very interesting stories of the men and women who shaped the history of the village. It is also very interesting as you will also learn all about the town’s fishermen who travelled along Provence’s coast in the past.
In addition, you will benefit from exceptional panoramas as the views from the museum are truly astonishing. You can see the Gulf of Saint-Tropez and the Massif des Maures mountain range.
Visit the Citadel and the Maritime Museum, let yourself be overwhelmed by the town’s daily life and its strong relationship to the sea, through traditional fishing techniques. You will be surprised to find out that the well-known fishermen village has a much greater importance.
The citadel is open for viewing every day from 10 am to 5 pm. The museum also provides guided tours with advanced bookings from 11 am to 15:30 pm.
