Overview

Monaco-Ville is also commonly known as Le Rocher de Monaco, the Rock of Monaco. It is the highest point in the Principality of Monaco, and offers one of the greatest picturesque panoramic views of the whole Côte d’Azur region.

Originally called Monoikos, after the temple of Hercules, Monaco Ville was occupied by various political entities before the Grimaldi family took over the fortress. The fortress on the rock was strategically positioned as a military position for controlling the area.

Before you reach this spectacular point of view, we advise you follow a specific route which will guide you through the Principality’s most iconic spots. Start by walking through the narrow medieval alleys of the Old Town, where eventually you will see Place Saint Nicolas and Placette Bosio. Then, move to the Chapel of Mercy, the Place de Justice and finally the Cathedral of Monaco, a phenomenal building situated in the heart of the old town. A little further, you will find the Place du Palais, admire the Prince’s Palace and then head to the view right next to the Place du Palais.

Every day at 11:55 you will see a lot of people gathering around the Rock to view the ceremonial changing of the guard at 11:55 am.

You can also access the old town of Monaco by bus line 1 or 2 or by terminus Place de la Visitation. Alternatively, chose the Rampe Major of Monaco, an incline walk which leads straight to the Place du Palais.
