Overview

Musée Matisse is a museum located in Nice which houses an extensive collection of the work of Henri Matisse, a French artist known for his striking use of colour. The museum focuses on his entire career from his beginnings to his final work. The museum is located north of the centre, easily accessible by bus.

Henri Matisse’s style is not easy to classify or place in a particular school or artistic direction. The graduate lawyer switched from one style to another according to his taste. In addition to being a leading figure in Fauvism, he also devoted himself to abstraction, impressionism, cubism, oriental decorations and the technique of gouache cuts. The fascinating collection at the Musée Matisse is arranged chronologically, containing works from all of the artist’s creative periods, allowing visitors to get a comprehensive picture of Matisse’s artistic development.

In addition to works of art, the museum also features a variety of objects that served as inspiration for the artist. Here you will find objects brought from Africa, Chinese vases, dishes, printed fabrics or various furniture, including a chair in the shape of a shell.

After viewing the collection, you can head to the nearby Régina Palace, where Matisse rented two apartments. He lived in one and worked in the other. It was here that he died in 1954. You don’t even have to go far to visit his grave. His final resting place is in a nearby cemetery.
