Overview

Founded by Prince Albert I in 1902, the Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology aims to maintain prehistoric artefacts discovered from the soil of the Principality and the neighbouring regions including Italy. The museum also operates as a research institute as well by carrying out laboratory studies and scientific publications.

The exhibition will transport you back in time to the rhythm of the glacial and interglacial periods, retracing the major stages in the evolution of humanity. A lot of the remains also suggest that a million years ago, the Côte d’Azur that we know today was a privileged site of habitat as well.

You will discover a rich collection of tombs from the Principality of Monaco that trace the most significant milestones in the history of mankind. The discoveries are both international and national, from a collection of animal bones to a collection of human remains and various pieces of pottery and jewellery, all of which prove that the Principality has been inhabited for more than 5,000 years.

There is the option of a guided tour as well and for those who have a passion for archaeology, the tour provides a visit to the local caves which lie under the territory, where discoveries are still being made today.

Located before the main entrance to the Exotic Garden, next to Villa Paloma of the New National Museum of Monaco, the museum opens its doors every day at 9 am to 6 pm. There is also a small gift shop and a café.
