To the east of Place Masséna lies the Promenade du Paillon. The city park leads from the main square of Nice all the way to Place Garibaldi. You can take a walk or enjoy the grass and have a picnic with your friends.
What is very interesting about the Promenade du Paillon is that back in the 19th century it didn’t actually exist. There was a long bridge that connected Nice’s Old Town with the rest of the city which was separated by the Paillon River. The river would often flood the city when there was heavy rain and so the city made the decision to cover up the river.
Today, the river flows under the city centre and the city is not separated as it used to be thanks to the Promenade du Paillon and Place Masséna which were built over the river and connect the city together.
The wide walkways paved with stone include grassy gardens, colourful flowerbeds, children’s play parks and splendid water fountains known as the ‘Miroir d’Eau’. You will find people and families hanging out, having picnics and even sunbathing on the grass.
