Just about 5 kilometres north of Saint Paul de Vence you can visit The Rosary Chapel, also known as the Matisse Chapel after its famous designer.

Matisse contracted cancer in the early 1940s, from which he then recovered in the nearby town of Nice. During this period of convalescence, he met nurse Monique Bourgeois. Monique helped him recover from his difficult illness and Matisse developed a strong bond with her. Monique even became a model for the ailing artist.

To repay her, Matisse had this magnificent building built for her, just a few kilometres north of Saint Paul de Vence, where Matisse also spent some time of his life. Its exceptional style gracefully unifies artistic and spiritual elements and is a dazzling example of Matisse’s genius.

At first glance, any visitor will notice the building’s rather extravagant blue roof. Inside the chapel, the bright white walls, and floors contrast with the glass mosaics with their predominant blue and yellow colours.

Even though the chapel is not located directly in the town of Saint Paule de Vence, it is definitely worth making the short trip to visit this chapel by the designed by the famous artist.
